About us
The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain actively upholds its mission of nurturing the exceptional musical talent of the young people of Great Britain by offering the very best musical provision from the country's greatest vocal tutors, collaborators and directors. Our young people surpass their own creative expectations when working with professional counterparts who bring new sensibilities and insights to repertoire, challenge traditions, and compel new levels of artistic accomplishment.
Orginally set up as a single choir of 100 of the best singers in the nation, NYCGB now provides the widest musical experiences for over 750 young people aged 9- 28. The educational structure comprises four Junior Choirs which provide opportunities for girls to join from the age of 11 and boys from the age of 9, two Training Choirs for singers aged 13-18, the National Youth Choir itself for singers aged 16-22 and world-renowned chamber choir, Laudibus.
The formation of the Training and Junior Choirs illustrates a key principle of our educational and musical approach; to be a youth organisation where outreach, education and artistry are all placed at the centre of our creative focus. This means that we are in a position to nurture young people from the point when they first display the glimmers of potential, exposing them to excellence and providing a progressive structure for musical and vocal development.
The residential courses that form the backbone of our activity include intensive rehearsals, individual voice coaching and lessons in musicianship, all of which take place in an environment which develops both teamwork and leadership. The courses aim to develop performance skills at the highest level, challenging young singers to embrace a depth and complexity of repertoire and to develop a flexible and creative approach to musical performance.
To ensure that we continue to offer a high quality artistic and educational programme, we engage with a diverse range of artists and educational bodies, nationally and internationally. By monitoring and responding to this wider musical landscape we can continuously develop our organisation and ensure that it is as relevant, supportive and exciting as possible.
